Pack Safaris: Day tours to Gamsberg

Introduction:

After long and
gamsberg.JPG (14584 bytes) hard negotiations with the owners of the Gamsberg Plateau, the German Max Planck Institute of Astronomy, the farmers of the Gamsberg area have been able to obtain an agreement for the utilisation of the mountain for tourism purposes with an access to the top of Gamsberg.
The package will include the following: Early morning pick-up at hotel/pension, transfer to Weissenfels Guest Farm (125 km from Windhoek on C26) by Microbus, tea/coffee and cookies at Weissenfels guest farm, further 15 km travel by Microbus to the point where the group will board an open Land Rover game viewing vehicle. The vehicle is manned by a driver/guide who will lead the group during the main part of the tour. Guests are taken on a scenic drive along the Namib escarpment in the open Land Rover to the bottom of Gamsberg (1 hour) before the steep ascend begins. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the vehicle. Once the vehicle has reached the top of the Gamsberg plateau, visitors disembark and go on a guided tour along the edge of the plateau on a specially laid out footpath, enjoying the views of the Namib. The duration of the walk is approximately 1,5 hours. The walk ends at a pergola (wooden structure with reed thatch providing shade) built on the edge on the northern cliff of the mountain, where lunch is served on a laid table.

Those guests not wanting or not able to walk, are taking to the pergola where they can relax and enjoy the uninterrupted views overlooking the Hakos mountains and the Namib. Lunch served is freshly prepared by Weissenfels Guest farm, known for it’s outstanding cuisine. The vehicle is equipped with a cooler box, which will yield cool drinks and refreshments throughout the day.
After lunch and coffee, the descend takes place in the early afternoon, when visitors are taken back to the Microbus. En route back to Windhoek, a stop will be made for a sundowner drink before travelling the remaining bit to Windhoek. Back in Windhoek, guests are dropped off at their respective accommodation.

Day tour for travellers with own transport, e.g. self driving tourists or Namibians.
Self driving drive by themselves to farm Weener, the last farm en route to the Gamsberg. Visitors arrive with their own vehicle at an agreed time. Driver/guide takes the group up the mountain and does the guiding throughout the tour. The program followed is the same as described above, only that the Windhoek/Gamsberg/Windhoek transfers are excluded. After the descent, visitors are taken back to their vehicles, from where they pursue their own program, i.e. either travelling back to Windhoek, staying at one of the guest farms overnight, visiting one of the two 4x4 trails in the area, etc.
Times:
1. The Windhoek/Gamsberg/Windhoek trip will commence at 7h30 and return at approximately 18h00.
2. The tour for self-drivers (no transfers) will start at 10h30 at Weener homestead and return at 16h00.
