The village was only proclaimed in 1965. This is a very popular stop-over for tourists between the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth Airport, Addo Elephant Park and Shamwari. Lyngenfjord is also an ideal base for visits to the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours, bungee jumping at the Bloukrans Bridge, the Kouga Cultural Centre, the Baviaans Kloof, Patensie and Hankey - the bread basket of Kouga and a wide selection of game farms in the region.
