Monday & Tuesday                          Etosha National Park

Departing Windhoek we travel via Okahandja, Otjiwarongo and Tsumeb to the Etosha National Park. The Park is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest wildlife-viewing experiences.  Its name is taken from the great white pan, which dominates the area. The surrounding woods and grasslands provide a habitat for the diverse array of bird and wildlife.

Today, other guests may join the tour or alternatively, we may transfer to another vehicle. Travel north-east to the riverside town of Rundu situated on the banks of the Okavango River, is situated in Kavango, the home of Namibia’s well known Kavango woodcarvers.  This ancient craft, handed down over generations, is today a flourishing industry. In the afternoon you can enjoy a boats cruise.

Travel via the Caprivi Strip to Mudumu National Park in the Eastern Caprivi, which is a wedge-shaped intrusion into Northern Botswana.  The park was proclaimed in 1990 and shares the Kwando River as its western border. Hundreds of elephants, large herds of buffalo and several other species cram the Kwando floodplains just before the onset of summer rains.  A varied cultural experience adds to the region’s attraction with a visit to one of the traditional villages, which provides an insight into the history and lifestyle of the Caprivian people.  Extended game drives are undertaken in the area.

Departing Swakopmund travel northwards following the coastal road to Henties Bay and on to Cape Cross Seal Reserve, which boasts over 100 000 Cape Fur Seals.  Head inland across the flat, barren plain to the abandoned tin mine of Uis and past the Brandberg Mountain (Namibia’s highest peak).  This is Damaraland with its rugged landscapes, sparse population and great mountains.

Twyfelfontein, meaning ‘doubtful spring’ has been occupied for thousands of years, with its spring attracting herds of game making this an excellent base for early hunters.  The slopes of the area are strewn with boulders; all dotted with thousands of engravings and some ancient paintings, a virtual open-air museum.  Geological features in the area include the Organ Pipes, Burnt Mountain and the Petrified Forest.

Enter the world famous Etosha National Park, where a full day of game driving is enjoyed. The game and birds found here are typical of the savannah plains of Southern Africa.  Herbivores such as zebra, elephant, giraffe, eland, blue wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok, kudu and steenbok abound.  Hundreds of bird species have been recorded, including many migrants during the summer period.  Larger felines are also found, such as lion, leopard, cheetah and caracal, with hyenas, cape fox, and black-backed jackal seen during the early mornings and late evenings.

A full day game drive through the park whilst visiting the numerous waterholes on route. During the afternoon, we exit the park and travel to our overnight lodge.

We depart the park and visit Lake Otjikoto, which is Herero for “deep hole”.  We continue to Tsumeb, a mining town well known for its copper, zinc, lead, silver and a variety of unusual crystals. Further guests may join the tour or alternatively guests may transfer to another vehicle. Tuesday                                                     Erongo Area

Depart Windhoek travelling via Okahandja to the north-west and the Erongo massif.  Its central feature is the eroded core of a volcanic crater that caved in under the weight of lava.  Erongo is considered to be an endemic hotspot for plants, reptiles, birds and small mammals.  In addition the area holds hidden sites where the ancient San painted magical images on granite surfaces.  An afternoon excursion will be undertaken to visit these sites.

Departing the Erongo region we travel into Damaraland, the area derives its name from the Damara People, one of the oldest cultural groups in Namibia.   We pass through Uis, once a flourishing tin mine and continue past the Brandberg Mountain to the town of Khorixas and Kamanjab.  Our evening is spent at a Lodge in the area.

Travelling northwards towards the Kunene River we pass through Opuwo and on to Epupa where a series of falls and cascades make up Epupa Falls with its ring of Palm trees and green winding river.  The Himba, an ancient tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists, many of whom still live and dress according the ancient traditions, live in scattered settlements throughout the Kunene Region.  The women especially are noted for their unusual sculptural beauty, enhanced by intricate hairstyles and traditional adornments.    Activities will include a visit to the Himba, sunset excursion to the Falls and walks along the river.

Travel to Ruacana Falls, once a natural  wonder it has changed with the construction of Angola’s Calueque Dam and is now a hydroelectric scheme.  This is the major crossroads between Opuwo and the Owambo region.  Travel along the banks of the river downstream to our Lodge.

Owambo is a collective name for a number of tribes that live in central-northern Namibia and southern Angola.  These tribes moved south from the Great Lakes area and settled between the Kunene and Okavango Rivers.  They form the largest language group in the country and represent just under 51% of Namibia’s population.   Most of these clans pursue subsistence agriculture lifestyles, growing their own crops and raising cattle and goats.  En route we visit the Olushanda Dam, Big Baobab Trees, German & British War Graves, Ongulumbashe Monument and a King’s Residence.  Oshakati is a bustling hive of activity with an open market and cuca shops with innovative names.
