FARM DUWISIB REST CAMP

Main accommodation - Southern region

The main local attraction is the castle, why did anyone build a castle in this semi desert area? This is the first thought that springs to ones' mind when driving towards Duwisib Castle. The Castle is remFarm Duwisib Rest Camp Namibiaote from any town, the building materials were transported over some incredible high sand dunes (Some of the largest in the world) by ox-wagons Farm Duwisib Rest Camp Namibia roomfrom Luderitz, some 300km away. When you get to the castle you will admire the sheer determination of the original owner/builder to start a new life here. Even the carpenters came from as far away as Scandinavia. Baron Hans Heinrich, a captain in the German army during the war against Herero's and Nama's (1904 -1906), decided to make Namibia his home (one can understand why once visiting this beautiful country). He married an eccentric millionaires, Jayta Humphry heard to be American, purchased 55,000 hectares of land and they started building the 22 room castle designed by Willi Sander in 1908 (completed in 1909). The Baron was an avid horse enthusiast and in 1914, the couple set out for Germany to buy some more horses. Unfortunately the 1st World War broke out during the journey. The Baron joined the German army and sadly died along with his dream on the 4th September 1916 at the battle of Somme. His wife was never to return to Namibia. The castle changed ownership many times and in 1991, it became a public museum. It is open every day from approximately 8.00hrs to 13.00hrs and 14.00hrs to 17.00hrs.
