More information

Harnas Lion, Leopard and Cheetah Farm was registered in April 1995 as a guest farm. The high costs of animal care necessitated this move. The Van der Merwe family had been taking in animals since the late 1970's and operated the farm on the income generated from cattle farming. The expenses and orphans grew quickly and by 1995, the farm housed some 200 creatures.
Since the establishment of the guest farm, Harnas has grown to become part of the public consciousness and therefore the Trust Fund and Wildlife Foundation was established during mid 1997 to control donations and monies received.
Today, Harnas operates as an animal sanctuary and orphanage. We are currently embarking on a new Wild Dog rehabilitation program which will utilize our dogs as a breeding colony. Further, we are involved in the Etosha Project which focuses on the escaping lions that are shot annually by farmers bordering the park. We are further involved with the Large Carnivore Management Forum and we hope to embark on an education campaign soon, visiting the primary schools of Namibia, teaching the value of conservation to our children.
There is no use in conserving the creatures of this country if we limit ourselves to our work within the perimeters of the farm.
The funds generated by the guest farm serve to support the Foundation.
The following amenities and activities exist:
- 2 four bed family wooden chalets
- 1 three bed wooden chalet
- 1 double bed wooden chalet
- 1 single bed wooden chalet
- 3 double bed igloos.
- Camping site with warm water, full amenities as well as a field kitchen equipped with a stove.
- Day visit facilities
- All bungalows are equipped with a small refrigerator, coffee, tea, kettle etc., as well as a braai area each. The igloos have a small sink. All the bungalows have bathrooms en suite.

We have a fully licensed bar and a restaurant. We do not serve a la carte meals however. We further offer the opportunity of self catering as well as braais for day visitors which they can either purchase pack from us or self cater entirely. We also offer bush braais during the evening on a regular basis. This can also be requested upon reserving. Reservations are essential.
